Radiator Cold at the Bottom? Here's Why
A radiator hot at the top and cold across the bottom is sludge — magnetite, the black iron oxide debris that untreated system water breeds — settled in the panel's lower channels where flow is slowest. Bleeding won't touch it, because there's no air involved. The fix scales with how many radiators are affected: one is a radiator job, several are a system job, and both end with the water chemistry that caused it.
Why sludge collects there
Central heating water and steel radiators react: without corrosion inhibitor, the steel oxidises internally and sheds magnetite particles into circulation. Gravity and slow flow do the rest — the debris settles along radiator bottoms, in low pipe runs and in the boiler's quieter passages. As the layer builds, water can't circulate through the bottom of the panel, so it stays cold while the top half still heats.
The same debris is doing invisible damage elsewhere: abrading pump bearings, jamming valve seats and restricting the boiler's narrow heat exchanger waterways, which is where cold radiator bottoms turn into kettling noises and eventually into component bills. The cold patch is the visible end of a system-wide condition.
One radiator or several?
One affected radiator, others fine: a localised deposit, often in a radiator with poor flow or an unfortunate position at the end of a run. Options are removing and flushing that radiator (£80–£150) or replacing it if it's old anyway (£150–£250, and you get new metal). Either way, check the inhibitor afterwards.

Not air: that's cold at the top, and bleeding fixes it in a minute. Not a stuck valve: that's a radiator cold all over while its neighbours cook, usually a seized TRV pin or a closed lockshield. Not balancing: that's far radiators lukewarm overall rather than cold specifically along the bottom. Getting the symptom right matters, because each has a different and much cheaper fix than the others.
And not, usually, a reason to replace radiators wholesale. Sound panels with sludged bottoms clean up; the money belongs in cleansing the water, not in new steel destined to corrode in the same untreated system. Replacement earns its place where panels are also pinholed, weeping or genuinely undersized.

Three things keep a cleaned system clean: inhibitor maintained at the correct concentration (tested at each annual service — it depletes over time and with every top-up), a magnetic filter on the boiler return capturing new magnetite before it circulates, and fixing pressure-loss leaks rather than living on top-ups, because each fresh fill of untreated water dilutes protection and restarts the corrosion clock.
Kept that way, a flushed system can go a decade or more without repeating this. Ask for the inhibitor test result; it's the proof the job was finished properly.
