How to Repressurise a Boiler (Step by Step)

Repressurising a boiler takes about two minutes and is one of the few heating jobs that's genuinely homeowner-safe: you're adding mains water to a sealed circuit through a purpose-made filling loop, entirely outside the boiler's case and nowhere near anything gas. Target is 1.2–1.5 bar cold. This guide covers the loop types you'll meet, the sequence, and the point at which topping up stops being the answer.


Find your filling loop

Three common types. The braided hose: a flexible silver-sleeved pipe beneath the boiler connecting the mains cold feed to the heating return, with a small lever or screw valve at one or both ends. The internal/keyed loop: built into the boiler's underside, operated by a plastic key or slot that slides across — common on newer Worcester and Ideal models, and shown in your manual. The rigid filling link: a fixed pipe with two valves, often found further from the boiler in older installations.

If you can't identify yours, look in the manual's index for 'filling' or 'topping up' — every manufacturer documents it with a diagram. And if the loop appears disconnected entirely (some are removed after commissioning by design), that's a call rather than an improvisation: reconnecting a loop correctly matters for backflow protection.

The step-by-step

One: turn the boiler off and let the system cool — you're aiming for cold pressure, and hot readings mislead. Two: locate the gauge (front panel, underside, or a digital reading in the display) and note the current figure. Three: open the filling loop valve(s) slowly — you'll hear water flowing. Four: watch the needle rise and close the valve(s) firmly at 1.2–1.5 bar. Five: if the boiler was locked out, press reset. Six: fire the heating briefly and re-check — a small rise when hot is normal.

Slowly is the operative word: opening a loop fully sends a rush that overshoots before you can stop it. If you do overshoot past ~2.5 bar, bleed a small amount off via a radiator bleed valve (with a cloth and container ready) until the gauge returns to band.

If it won't hold or won't fill

Pressure that won't rise at all despite an open loop points at a closed mains isolation valve, a blocked or failed loop, or a gauge/sensor fault; none are worth forcing, and all are quick engineer diagnoses.

Pressure that rises fine but the boiler still won't run means low pressure wasn't the whole fault: note the error code and move to the relevant code guide or book a visit. And a gauge that reads zero while the system is clearly full of water is a sensor conversation, not a filling one.

Doing it well, long-term

Good habits: check the gauge monthly during heating season (ten seconds, and it catches slow leaks early), always re-check after bleeding radiators, and note the date each time you top up — the interval between top-ups is the diagnostic your engineer will want. Keep the manual (or a photo of the filling-loop page) somewhere findable; the two-minute job becomes a twenty-minute hunt without it.

And know the boundary this guide respects: filling loops, gauges, bleed valves and reset buttons are yours. Anything requiring the boiler's case to come off is Gas Safe engineer territory, legally and practically — the sealed-system side is deliberately designed so homeowners can manage pressure without ever going near the gas side.

If the symptoms don't quite match

Faults read textbook-clean in guides and messier in airing cupboards: if your symptoms straddle two patterns above or match none cleanly, that ambiguity is itself useful diagnostic information — tell the engineer precisely that. What pressure should I fill my boiler to?

1.2–1.5 bar with the system cold. It will read somewhat higher when hot, which is normal — set the cold figure and ignore the hot one.

Can I damage the boiler by topping it up?

Not by doing it correctly. The risks are overshooting (the relief valve discharges outside — messy, not dangerous) and leaving the loop open (slow over-pressurisation). Close the valves firmly and you're fine.

Why does my boiler have no filling loop?

Some are removed after commissioning by design, and some systems use a keyed internal arrangement you may not recognise. Check the manual; if there's genuinely nothing, an engineer can fit a compliant loop.

How often should I need to do this?

Ideally once a year or less. Monthly top-ups mean a leak worth tracing — and mean your inhibitor is being diluted each time, which brings its own slow costs.
