L2 on an Ideal — a Logic-range staple — is the ignition lockout on most models: the boiler failed to establish or retain a flame and has stopped, requiring a reset once the cause is addressed. On frosty mornings across the UK, the cause is overwhelmingly the condensate pipe; the rest of the year, the usual ignition suspects apply.
What the L2 code means
The Logic's start sequence — fan proof, gas valve, spark, flame confirmation — must complete within its window; failure lands on L2 (with F2 covering flame loss once running, on most models). Ideal's implementation locks out and waits for a manual reset rather than endlessly retrying, which is the correct, conservative behaviour: a boiler that can't prove its flame shouldn't keep opening its gas valve to guess.
What you can safely do yourself
Work the outside-the-case list in order. One: in freezing conditions, thaw the external condensate pipe with warm water and retry — the classic winter cause of this code family. Two: verify gas is actually reaching the property — a working hob says supply is fine; a dead hob plus a meter error message says call your supplier, not a heating engineer. What not to do: repeatedly hammer the reset button. What causes it
Winter's dominant cause first: the frozen condensate pipe, blocking the condensate route and stopping ignition — Logics are fitted in enormous numbers to homes where the condensate run goes straight out the nearest wall, so the seasonal spike is pronounced. Otherwise: gas supply interruptions (hob test; meter errors; prepayment credit), ignition electrodes and leads ageing, gas valve faults, and flue issues.
