Find the pressure gauge on the boiler's front or underside. Cold, it should read around 1–1.5 bar; below 1 bar — and especially below 0.5 — most boilers lock out. To top up, locate the filling loop (usually a braided hose with one or two small valves beneath the boiler), open the valve(s) slowly until the needle climbs to about 1.2–1.5 bar, close them fully, then press the boiler's reset button. That sequence clears a low-pressure lockout in the majority of cases.

Two cautions. Don't overfill — above about 2.5–3 bar the pressure-relief valve will start dumping water outside, creating a new fault. And if you can't find or work the filling loop (some are keyed or detachable), stop and call rather than force anything — talking it through on the phone is free.

What causes it

Pressure loss routes are the sealed-system classics: weeping radiator valve glands, a pressure-relief valve passing to the outside pipe, recent radiator bleeding, an expansion vessel that has lost its air charge (pressure climbing high when hot, collapsing when cold, is its signature), or an internal seep within the boiler.
